Drummer Boy

This was the day to go to Wakefield to see our first live game of Rugby League this season. It was the quarter final of the Challenge Cup. I was at work last night and it was much, much busier than Friday but at the end it quietened down  so we still got away on time. An early night as Saturdays go, and an earlier start than normal to get ready without rushing.

We set off in good time. I enjoy travelling in the car and relished the journey. We stopped at a service station and had Burger King for lunch. First time in ages, probably since our last match last season so that felt like a treat too.

Wakefield's ground is old, run down and open to the elements so I was glad it was mild and warm. Six years ago today we also went there and took a 62-0 thrashing so it has not always been a happy hunting ground for us. The nerves jangled when Wakefield scored early on, and their No.7, Mason Lino was kicking us to death - we were fearing a repeat. Shortly after Wigan scored to level it up, and although Wakefield made it difficult especially in the first half, we never looked back from that point winning in the end 6-36.

At half time the draw for the semi finals took place and Wigan will face mortal rivals and current form team of the moment St. Helens in a few weeks' time at Elland Road Leeds. That will be a much bigger challenge!

Wakefield have a rule about opposing fans not being allowed to take musical instruments in to the ground but somehow the young lad who plays a drum to motivate the crowd managed to smuggle his drum in (No idea how!) He did not strike it up until close to the end and the stewards nearby seemed content to let it go until someone told them to chuck him out. He duly stood on the street just outside the entrance directly behind where we were standing and played there to get all the fans singing and chanting. I nipped out and took a photo just as the final hooter sounded!

Home now. Fortunately no cooking or washing up to be done. Brian is feeling a little under the weather though. He may do a Covid test before work tomorrow. ..
