Fluffed-up ruff

Three starlings landed on the lawn, and this one kept fluffing up its ruff feathers. Wonder if it's a juvenile trying to attract attention to be fed, or if it's an adult trying to attract a partner. Or neither of these. I love watching starlings - such entertaining birds!

Over thirty years ago I sowed seeds and grew a miniature rose. Every year it's done well, producing lots of tiny flowers. This year, all of a sudden it's doubled in size and, basically, gone wild - literally! All its leaves are in 7s, not 5s, so I've dug it up and, at M's invitation, planted it at the bottom of their garden. How strange, though! Perhaps it's the Somerset air that differs from that in Devon (and, previously, Staffordshire). Nah! It's probably just run its course. Perhaps I'll try seeds again one day.
