Galloping Goose No. 5

We had a special visitor today - the Rio Grand Southern Goose 5 came by.  It is on a special trip to Cascade and back today.  When it runs past you have to smile.  It sort of rocks back and forth like a goose, and has a horn that sounds somewhat like a goose.  These "motors" were invented by the RGS so that they could keep the US Mail contract when their freight business was poor.  They made them (there were 7) in their shops with regular auto/truck engines, and eventually a Wayne bus body for passengers.

Number 5 lives today in Dolores, Colorado and their heritage association brings it out for trips on the narrow gauge.  The goose was totally rebuilt and refurbished by volunteers in Dolores.  Great job!
