Shooting Star

But in the garden...not the night sky!

I believe this is Dodecatheon hendersonii or Henderson's Shooting Star. There are three native Shooting Stars here, but this one fits the description. It's found in cool, moist, shady areas of the Willamette Valley (in western Oregon) and into the lower elevations of the Cascade Range. It starts leafing out in March and flowers in April and will remain flowering until June when it goes summer dormant and disappears. What a pleasure to find tucked into the ferny corner of my back garden.
