Tension

The beauty of the Menai Suspension Bridge can easily belie the strength and power of the structure - and the sheer brilliance of the engineering feat of Thomas Telford who in 1826 built what was then the biggest suspension bridge in the world with huge chain cables supporting the 176 metre span.

Once the only route from the mainland to Anglesey, now more often viewed from the Britannia Bridge which carries the A55 speeding across the straits, today we pass this landmark on our way back from an afternoon catching up with G’s brother and his wife. We stop so I can photograph it for today’s challenge - the tension between strength and beauty, water and stone, and, of course, the tension of metal cables taking up the weight of that not inconsiderable span.
