Rome

Today's blipper-sourced shot for our series of pictures of locations mentioned by LornaL in her diary of World War II is of Rome. Thank you to LauraMuir for supplying the picture.

Lorna cites Rome twice in her journal. These two references are figurative, rather than commentary on the progress of the war. In the entry that covers 12th-14th May 1940 Lorna writes about fiddling while Rome burns; on 15th May 1940 she ponders the future of civilisation with reference to the fall of the city. Both entries feature in Episode 6 of our podcast series. (Twelve audio files cover (1) all the content of Lorna's war diary in eight episodes, and (2) four bonus episodes of some of Lorna's powerful poetry.)

In the second of these two entries Lorna expresses hopes that her war diary might be found in the future when she says:

'I shall bury this diary, so deep that one day, in a saner world someone may find it and know that the last legions of civilisation meant not domination but good, even though their hands were feeble and their foresight all too dim.'

If only Lorna were to know about the LornaL journal, this journal, the podcast series, and the podcast series launch event in May!

We're keen to receive more pictures of the 124 places that feature in our interactive map of locations related to the Diary of the war. Please do contact Hazel at h.hall@napier.ac.uk with your contribution, should you be able to supply one (or more). Thank you.
