Jackdaw Celebrations

It’s our 44th wedding anniversary, and we celebrate with a meal at Conwy’s Jackdaw restaurant. We’ve been meaning to try it since it opened earlier this year and this seems the ideal opportunity. The chef, Nick Rudge, is a local lad who worked as Junior Sous Chef in Blumenthal’s Fat Duck. Inevitably furloughed due to Covid, he set up the ‘Jackdaw at home’ venture whereby restaurant quality meals could be ordered then cooked at home. We ordered one of these for one of my Covid birthdays - and it really was sensational.

And so tonight we eat in the restaurant, set in an old gothic style building that used to house Conwy’s tiny cinema. And it does not disappoint, with delicious food and great wine. Incidentally, the name ‘Jackdaw’ comes from the label given to those born within the walls of Conwy’s ancient town - a label warn with pride.

We take a taxi to the venue, but decide to use our bus passes to return home, involving walking from Conwy to Llandudno Junction, crossing the river and giving us the chance to take this selfie. When the bus eventually arrives, we are entertained by a group of lads who seem to run through their karaoke versions of Queen’s greatest hits! It all adds to what’s been a very special evening.

Thanks again for your response to yesterday’s reflections and the sympathy in terms of NHS frustrations. I’ve just looked back to my anniversary blip last year and I must admit I wish more progress had been made. Still, I know I’m blessed with the.most caring and patient of husbands, and let’s hope next month sees things moving forward!
