Hella-va good day

I don’t even know which pictures to choose.

There is an extremely popular waterfall, Seljalandfoss. Yesterday we saw thousands upon thousands (it looked like that anyway) of people walking up to it in a line. Early this morning I went when there would be no one there. That is why it looks like the sun isn’t quite up yet. It was glorious to be there, glorious to walk behind the waterfall, and glorious that it was so close to the AirBnB so I could roll out of bed, put clothes on, and go do it and then be back at a perfectly reasonable hour.

We then went to https://www.cavesofhella.is/book-now the Caves of Hella where we learned fascinating things. I always thought the Vikings coming to Iceland was a bit of a navigational or storm accident. Actually, people saw where birds were flying and had a sense there was land in that direction. People went boating around all the islands all the time. There was an island called Thule which may be Iceland and Celts went there all the time and they may be the folks who HAND DUG CAVES and then lived in them and maybe were here with the Vikings came to settle.

Then Rejnisfiara, the famous black sand beach. First we went to the wrong part, over a bumpy road that is best taken at 2 km/hour. Patience. Then we went to the right one and found a parking space!

I learned to just use your iPhone in lousy light, the iPhone will do a much better job than one’s fancy camera.

Now we are in a stunning AirBnB. It is in the middle of nowhere. It is gorgeous, the setting is gorgeous (see Kate’s blip), there are horses and sheep running around, and after we leave may we never drive that many kilometers on gravel again. I have driven a lot of gravel roads, or been driven, but not in forever and I don’t remember being so stressed about it. I probably was never on gravel and in a nice car.
