Free Fuel

Our gardener Steve also works as a groundsman for a local rugby club. The rugby club just happen to own a hydraulic log splitting machine. So today, with the club’s permission, he has brought it with him to split all the logs from our felled copper beech tree. The machine takes two men to manhandle on and off his van, it’s quite a beast!

Together, Steve and the beast made short work of our tree and it has provided us with an almost full log store. We have another, more compact, log store containing a much smaller amount of logs which were left over from previous winters. They’re properly dry, so we’ll leave our new ones to dry out for as long as possible. In extras I’ve put a photo of our free fuel, and a shot of Steve holding a log which has some interesting striations on it.

All the remaining bits and pieces of tree trunk that were too small to use as fuel were added to the wren piles in the back corner of the garden. I still live in hope!
