In Dark December

Deep red the streetlight paints each sodden slab,
to make the rain-drenched paving far less drab.

Though some would switch off artificial lights,
for badgers, owls and all who love dark nights,

In chilly winter, grim and grey and damp,
I welcome every gently shining lamp.

That said, I don't like to see harsh lights or searchlights, especially in domestic settings and the countryside. I don't like birds being disturbed if it can be avoided, and I do like to gaze at the stars. Tonight, though, the colourful puddled ground caught my eye.
