The Tradition of the Epiphany

On January 6th, 12 days after Christmas, the Epiphany is celebrated. All the boulangeries over here sell their special breads or pies at this time of the year. There are all different kinds, but my personal favourite is the Galette Pithiviers (so named after the French town called Pithiviers). It is made of flaky pastry and contains a filling of ground almonds mixed with eggs, butter, sugar and perfumed with a few drops of natural almond essence.
Inside the galette is a small porcelaine figurine called a 'santon' (little saint) and the person who finds this in their slice of galette is the king or queen for the day and gets to wear the golden crown which always comes with the crown of bread or galette.

We ate our small galette this morning for breakfast as Jean is going back over the lake today! 

I read that the following countries celebrate the Epiphany:
Austria, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland, Ethiopia (but on different date that varies annually), parts of Germany, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, Spain,  France and Switzerland. I have a feeling that there may be others.
