If you can't beat them...

Downy Birch Catkins ( Betula pubescens )

Down at the studio again, and for a change we had a dry spell with a little weak sunshine.  I took the opportunity to have a wander out and down the lane beside the buildings.  Beside the car parking, there are a number of trees, including both the native birches.

The Silver Birch showed no signs of catkins but this Downy Birch had lots.  the blue sky through the trees looked as if it would make a reasonable background.

I found the fact one tree had catkins and the other not interesting.  Both trees are monoecious (have male and female catkins on the same tree) I will try to remember to keep checking as the year goes on.
