Cuckoo

Actually this is a juvenile Koel, a cuckoo species.  Acording to my field guide you can tell because it's eyes are stone coloured rather than the red of adults.  The male adult is glossy black and they have this piercing call that is often the cause of early morning wakening for many people and lots of threats of looking for rifles.  This one was must have been very young and on a retreat as I didn't hear a peep out of him.  There was a juvenile channel billed cuckoo nearby which had obviously been hatched in a Currawong's nest as it was bothering a currawong which was feeding it.   Honestly I thought something was being slowly murdered when it was being fed it was kicking up such a raucous.  Perhaps the Koel  was quiet because it was in shock.

I also saw a male and female satin bower bird in the distance and lots of other wrens and small birds.  Mums garden backs onto bushland and so there are quite a lot of different birds from my garden at home.

Both the Koels and Channel Bills migrate in the Winter to Papua New Guinea.  It seems so exotic.
