Name Change

One online bird site describes this medium-sized woodpecker as “pugnacious and conspicuous” • It’s conspicuous because of its red head (male) and neck (male and female), and the zebra-like patterned feathers on its back • It’s certainly not conspicuous because of the faint pinkish splash of color on its belly, which is exactly why this bird is identified as the Red-bellied Woodpecker • Couldn’t “they” have assigned a more appropriate name for this uniquely marked bird? • Perhaps Red-headed Woodpecker was already taken by the time this Red-headed Woodie made its first appearance. Okay, that’s logical, but then who suggested to name it Red-bellied when the belly isn’t red? Rarely does the casual observer even get a glimpse of said belly with its small area of pinkish feathers • Poor RBW • Birders everywhere should unite and demand a name change for this stunning under-appreciated, under-rated woodpecker, LoL! How about Zebra Woodpecker, or Red-crowned Woodpecker? Any other suggestions? • Snow on the way tonight into tomorrow! Get ready for a winter blip to end the week :)
