A day in the life

Ice-droppings

Some 6500 years ago (BC) this rock peeked out of the water and hunters had come from the south to live on my island, "Öland". The last ice-age has left it lying here when the ice slowly melted away, about 1100 years ago, but it took a long time before it actually poked out of the water. The sea-level was then about 25 metres over todays level. The pressure of the ice, about 3,5 km thick, had an impact on the earth and it took a long time for the land to rise out of the water. The land is still rising about 10 mm a year. My island consists of a slab of limestone, tilting slightly towards the east. The southern part of it consist of a nature type called Alvar, defined by the soil not being deeper than a few centimetres.

All this information might make you look at this lone rock in a different perspective. Today, when I had my walk on Alvaret, I found that the cow-paths were leading to it, it looks like they've been using it as a shelter from the wind. The rock is about 1.6 metres high.
