Marjorie's ramblings

We had an adventure!

The weather today was very kind (but windy).

We said goodbye to Nick who took the ferry to Ullapool and travelled on to Inverness.

Helena and I were out for the day with Dave. He opted to drive on the north west side of the island, a good choice.

After a bit I’d sightseeing (whale bones and a black house) he drove down a narrow path towards the coast and then across a field.

There were rocks and waves and sun. See second extra for the rainbow that greeted us.

It’s a shame that the car could not get back up the field. It was too soft and muddy. We tried various tactics, including pushing, to no avail.

Eventually Dave got out and pushed with Helena while I drove the car. We made it. Twenty minutes later Dave’s heart was still racing. Lunch was at Port Ness.

Afterwards we went to see the lighthouse on Ness Point. The fulmars are already settling into nesting areas. Did you know that they start breeding when they are 6 years old, are monogamous, return to the same nesting site every year and live until they are 40+?

We enjoyed watching them flying effortlessly on the wind.

The second extra is taken near to Ness Point.

On our way back we walked over a very boggy moor to see two sheilings. These were summer dwellings. Mothers took their children and the cattle there.

What a brilliant day!
