The weather channel
must not be functioning well
today - what is wrong?

It took about an hour to leave the Las Vegas outskirts, pass Nellis Airforce Base and start the climb up to the Great Basin. It was a blue sky morning and traffic was moving smoothly.

This route to Ely, Nevada is a two lane highway with no passing lanes. It crosses the desert landscape with its sagebrush, creosote bush, yucca, Joshua trees and tumbleweed. The highest elevations were dusted with snow today.

My only stop enroute was the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge. There is a lovely visitors centre that has been added since I was last by this way. The area is a spectacular wetlands that attracts migratory birds and local wildlife. It is considered an oasis as it is fed by springs in this desert landscape.

I left my quilted heart near the parking lot by the centre.

I arrived in Ely, Nevada about 3 PM. Snow is in evidence in and around the town. The streets and sidewalks are bare and dry. Winter isn't far away.

The weather channel lists the local high temperature for Ely to be 27 F yet there is snow melting in the shadows today. It must be warmer than indicated. The sun feels really warm today.
