Turning Tables

When we cleared the in-law’s house in 2017, we kept a metal table base and vowed to source a new top for it so we could use it as an outside table. In 2018, whilst we were having the roof replaced, Andy said he would keep an eye out for any pieces of granite or marble that might be the right size. In 2019 he said he’d removed a long granite worktop from a kitchen he’d been renovating, and reckoned that about half of it would make an ideal top for our table.
We told him to go ahead and get it cut and have the edges finished. We looked forward to enjoying al fresco meals in 2020.
And then you know what happened. Our piece of granite was trapped in the stonemasons and by the time they reopened Andy, like a lot of builders at that time, was absolutely flat out with work. By the time things quietened down a bit in 2021, Andy needed a new hip so wasn’t in any position to go lugging great lumps of granite around. And we were trying to get all our redecoration done, which carried over into 2022. At that point we did ask when we might get our table top and he said he would “get on to it”.
We didn’t really press the point as we had enough on our plates with trying to sell the flat and sort my mum out. But, last month, Andy helped us move the last bits of furniture out of the flat so we had his undivided attention for the day and were able to plead for our piece of granite.
And today, some six years after we started the project, we have a table! The top is the perfect size and is beautifully finished. At the moment, weight alone is keeping it in place, but I’ll probably take it off again shortly, touch up the paint on the base and then attach the top with some silicone to make it secure.
Like a lot of things to do with this house, it’s taken longer than we thought. But, like all the other things we’ve done, it was worth the wait.
