Marjorie's ramblings

The village at the end of the world!

Sunset last night was pleasant but not spectacular. One bonus was to see two puffins pottering about on the top of the nearby cliff. I will add one to yesterday’s blip as an extra.

There was wall to wall sunshine today. I walked into the hills above our tiny village. It was extremely peaceful and I was able to spend time sitting and drinking in the sights and sounds (little apart from a few birds).

There was not a huge diversity of wild flowers but marsh spotted orchids studded the hillside, growing close to the ground probably because it is usually very windy here.

I also saw wood cranesbill, ragged robin, alchemilla mollis and alpine butterwort. Buttercups and marsh marigolds added to the sunny effect.

Alun (Perth, Australia) and I enjoyed an exquisite lunch of smoked salmon from the village café. It opens intermittently so we were lucky.

Over the course of the day and evening, the rest of the group arrived: Marv (USA and student of Ansel Adams), Elina and Sally (Hong Kong), Ian (Liverpool but without his luggage which arrived later) Laurence (London). I think we will have lots of fun.

We ate at the same café as last night. The food was excellent again and took ages to prepare and cook (again). It was a convivial evening.

Rushy, our guide, indeed rushed around, ferrying people from the airport.

My extra is a small shepherd’s hut just below the mountain. Later I met a man who was working to restore a cliffside path after a land slip. Hard and dangerous work.

What an excellent first full day.
