a lifetime burning

By Sheol

Fresh today

I was in luck this morning and managed to find this female southern hawker freshly emerged.  I've got some earlier shots where she is still quite wet and her wings are still being held vertically (see the extra), but I particularly like this shot, where she has just opened her wings and extended them for the first time.

I would dearly liked to have snipped away the bit of vegetation between my lens and her left wing, but I didn't want to risk causing her to try to fly before she was ready.

As you can see, when first emerged she's quite well camouflaged and not that easy to spot, unless you are looking for her.
