The Lozarithm Lens

I visited Mr and Mrs Spotlight Kid's for a pre-Christmas lunch, but I had first joined my brother Mr SK at Kingston Maurward College for a walk along the lake and a tour of the gardens and pet animals. It is an agricultural college owned by Dorset Council whose grounds are open to the public. Rain eased off for our walk but otherwise got heavier throughout the day. There were swans on and beside the lake, which is fed by the River Frome, and the outdoor pets included pygmy goats, gigantic rabbits and tiny Shetland ponies.

On the night drive home in Archie I experienced roads more flooded than any I had previously encountered including one I thought I wasn't going to make it through as the water rose halfway up the bonnet and splashed like fountains on either side, higher than the car. I almost ground to a halt and conked out, but made it through.

Lozarithm's Lozarhythm Of The Day:
The Mamas & the Papas - Dedicated To The One I Love (recorded live, Ed Sullivan Show, 1967)
This was Michelle Gilliam's first lead vocal on a Mamas and Papas single, recorded in November 1966 and a big hit for the group. I owned the single in the sixties and used to wonder who the composer, 'Pauling', was, and in those days there was no internet and no reference books to look it up in. Lowman Pauling turned out to be the electric guitarist in the doo-wop group the Five Royales who recorded the song in August 1957. The girl group the Shirelles revived it in 1959 and it became a big Billboard hit when re-issued in 1961. Presumably this was the source of the Mamas and Papas' version. Lowman Pauling was an important figure as he was the inspiration for Steve Cropper to take up guitar, and so led indirectly led to Booker T and the MG's and the whole Stax Records sound.
