Bridges and ferries

Another lovely day - sunshine from the start, though by late afternoon it was clouding over. Daughter One came over from Mull this morning as it’s Mrs M’s birthday and we’d planned a lunch outing to the Atlantic Centre on the island of Luing (pronounced Ling).

We drove down to Kilninver and on to the island of Seil via Clachan Bridge, aka as ‘The Bridge over the Atlantic’. A slow four mile drive across the island and we reached Cuan Ferry, where the 285m crossing takes about 3 minutes. Unfortunately the usual ferry, ‘Belnahua’, was off for servicing and the replacement was a drive on/reverse off vessel, which appears to have caused consternation among some drivers! While reversing off we were instructed to turn round as we left the vessel rather than reversing up the slip as I assumed we would do.

Another 2.5 mile drive along narrow roads brought us to Cullipool on the west coast, the largest village on the island and built around a flooded quarry. Luing is one of the Slate Islands, and when mining finished in 1965 life on the island was changed for ever.

We enjoyed a walk up the hill past the one-time church, now a house, where wonderful views were to be had. This is my Blip today. The main islands in the distance are the Garvellachs, but there are numerous other islets and rocks out there. Bang in the centre is the lighthouse on the island of Fladda. The view of the Atlantic Centre, perched on the edge of the flooded quarry, is my extra today.

After a tasty lunch we made our way back to Oban - a wonderful day out which we must do again some time.
