Ringside View

Anybody in this house on 16th April 1746 would have had a ringside view of the battle of Culloden. A bit too close possibly as the cottage is right on the English (British) lines. The farmhouse of Leanach (in the picture) survived the battle so it perhaps was not the worst place to be, as long as the people inside were able to establish their loyalty to the winning side.

I had arranged to meet friends at the Culloden today, a journey of roughly two and a half hours from Aberdeen. The weather just about held on, cloudy but no rain. We walked around the battlefield site getting as far as the Highland lines. The visitor centre seems to be quite interesting though I must admit I did not give it the attention it deserved.

Back to Aberdeen in the evening, slightly slower than the satnav suggested due to traffic. Most of the journey between the two cities is on roads which are not particularly conducive to overtaking. I lost 15 minutes compared to the satnav forecast.
