Cley Churchyard
A busy day today. First it was my Sainsburys delivery. Then I booked a slot this morning at the recycling centre to take all the timber that I’d collected in empty compost bags from breaking up my greenhouse staging unit. That was at no charge as one of the ‘DIY waste’ slots I’m allowed, a much better system that when we paid for taking even 1 piece of timber. Next I spent an hour out the front weeding and sweeping up all the dropped blossom from my neighbour opposite’s tree. I collected three large plastic carriers for topping up the garden bin before they arrived to collect it. Then off to the recycling centre where the staff at Sheringham were excellent, very helpful, and so different to my experience at Hempton. Back home I ordered something online after getting a number of questions answered over the phone. Next off to Cley Visitor Centre for a good talk about the butterflies of Norfolk, including which locations are best to find them and on what plants / trees.
Then straight off to the Thursdays @3 concert at Cley Church. It was an excellent event with flute, piano and several singers remembering VE Day 1945. Each song was followed by a spoken piece including Churchill’s speech on the day, the King’s speech, a poem, diary entries and childhood memories of VE Day in Norwich. Feelings were mixed in this region as battalions of the Royal Norfolk Regiment were allocated to serve in the Far East and so for lots of serving men in the area WWII was not over. The songs included White Cliffs of Dover, Mulberry Cottage, Java Jive, The Lambeth Walk, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and We’ll Gather Lilacs. A very enjoyable event, there was even a couple in 1940s outfits dancing in the aisle for some songs.
