Backblip: Sound of Sleat

We leave our mooring off Portree this morning and head down the Sound of Sleat, the body of water that separates the Isle of Skye from the mainland. The big skies are mesmerising, and the changing landscapes fascinating. The tides are interesting - at one point we are down to 1.5 knotts.

Our destination is Inverie on the Knoydart peninsula, the most remote village on the British mainland. It is not connected to the national road system, so access is via ferry from Mallaig or a 17 mile walk over the mountains. Our boat moors in the bay and a group of us go for a short walk to have our packed lunch overlooking the bay. On the return I have a half a pint sitting outside the Old Forge, the community run pub overlooking the bay.

Then this afternoon we head to the island of Eigg, mooring in Galmisdale Bay. Ashore by tender for a walk around the bay, then back on the boat for dinner. It’s a lovely late evening on the deck. I take a series of photos of an arctic tern catching a fish and then returning to a big buoy to present it to his reluctant partner. One in extras.
