Driftwood Dome II

Last saturday”s blip was Driftwood Dome, inspired by Andy Goldsworthy’s wonderful artworks. Grandson Oskar had seen the book “Time” and was very interested, but Tatum and Niklas ended up building the dome, with great enthusiasm. We had to leave for a short time before the water came up and only saw the pieces floating away after we returned. So we needed to build another. This time Tatum and her girlfriend Isabel built a similar dome (they started over once as they didn’t like the construction..) in about the same place according to where the tide would be high. And then we watched the water roll under it. It looked so beautiful rising out of the water. We thought maybe it would stay put in the few inches of water as there were no wind waves and no boat wakes, just a very still sea. Just after the high tide, it righted it’s slightly slanted self and a few of the topmost pieces fell off, but then the whole thing floated!! For maybe 20 minutes it floated gently before one part collapsed. And hour later after the tide had receded however, there were still parts of it together, unlike the last one which totally dispersed. The girls agreed that the best part was when it was surrounded by water and the uncertainty of what would happen.
I really love what Andy Goldsworthy does with the natural world. Was inspired too, by PaulaJ who has just documented his arch series, along ancient drover’s roads from Scotland to England, building a red stone arch where each sheepfold was. Check out her interesting and well done series and explanation of the Goldsworthy's journey.
I’ve put some documented photos of this Driftwood Dome phases. HERE on Flickr (you can see the Lion's Mane jellyfish that are all over the beaches now)
and added more photos to the Girls Week at PI

Edit : think I have the links right now!
