Grand Harbour
I slept like a log last night. Effective AC which isn't too noisy and no sleep the night before meant I slept right through to 9.30 - 8 30 UK time. Breakfast runs till a very civilised 10.30, so we still had plenty of time.
We hung around till late morning then headed into Valletta. We walked to the Barrakka Lift which goes down from high level Valletta City to Port Level, a height of 60m - in 23 seconds. A return trip costs a euro. An absolute bargain especially the up trip!
The blip shows the lift from the entrance gate to Valletta with an enlargement of the actual lift itself. A wonderful structural piece of engineering. You can see the high level walk away going across to the top of the lift shaft from the Barrakka Gardens. Valletta deals very well with being a world heritage site. It is crammed full of old, older and ancient buildings and they all live very comfortably together.
The other shots are of the Grand Harbour itself an enormous natural harbor, and some of the monstrous cruise ships that are here at the moment. They don't dwarf the city too much as most of it is high on the rock of the island.
It was 42' when we went back to the hotel mid afternoon.
The extra has some evening shots. The first two are street scenes. The sculpter's window is at first floor level but your eyes are drawn up to it. The washing is the same pieces as were there yesterday so I think they are part of the landscape. They would have dried within an hour of being put out so two days is definitely excessive.
The middle and bottom left are examples of how the ancient and modern are fitted together. The staging is on the ruins of the 19th century Royal Opera House which was destroyed by the Luftwaffe in 1942.
The new version is built on scaffolding and open work over the top of the ruins which are still accessible.
There is a sold out concert tomorrow night of an ABBA tribute, as the theater is now open air we've been entertained by rehearsals, lasting an hour or so, for the last two nights. You can see one of the performers on stage with the orchestra. I risked life and limb climbing on the ruins to take that picture, lol. The final shot came by chance as we were crossing the bridge out of the city when we were treated to a wonderful firework display. My new camera did quite well.
