Miner's Falls

Lake Superior is fed by more than 200 rivers, including this, the Miner's River, that tumbles down the sandstone cliffs in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The trail to Miner's Falls is about half a mile and meanders through some fabulous old growth maple woods.

We planned this trip to escape the stifling heat, but as it happens it is not so hot at home now, and up on the lakeshore it is positively chilly. It was also overcast all day, not that it really mattered, this stretch of Lake Superior shoreline is mesmerizingly beautiful. We explored the beaches at Sand Point (no-one was sunbathing!), wandered along woodland trails, took the boardwalk through the marsh (where I found a most obliging pair of Black-throated Green Warblers, sadly I left the bird cam at home), looked down on the dazzling blue waters of the lake at Miner's Castle before heading off to see the falls.

A most satisfying day.

(Sand Point Beach and Miner's Castle in the extras.)
