Marjorie's ramblings

Another day - another pre-walk

It's Monday and it was the pre-walk for Sewingshields Circular. This is a great 8 miler which is in the festival on Tuesday October 8th. So far only 9 people have booked. Is it the day? Is it the name? Is it the leader??!

There were high winds today which made the first section hard going as we walked west along the Hadrian's Wall Trail. At the trig point we could see 2 reservoirs, 4 loughs and a lake. We could even see Hexham in the far distance. Beyond Housesteads Roman fort, you come to the only section of Hadrian's Wall you are officially allowed to walk on. I'm on it as I took this photo and you can see the Wall snaking away along the top of the ridge. How helpful of the people in red coats to go ahead and pose for me - they do give some idea of scale. (You might just see them in large.)

Not much further before we turned north on the Pennine Way and the track became muddier and, at times, was under water. I do hope the people who have signed up have gaiters! Then through the forest - all was well. Then I was certain, knew, thought that there was a footbridge to cross a burn. I sent the 2 backups ahead to find it so that I could take a bearing from the gate and be prepared for poor visibility...........but no bridge was to be found. There were easy stepping stones......

Finally we made our way over open access land with wide views that blow your mind.

So, if you are free and in the area on 8th, do book a place. Otherwise you will have to wait for the photos.
