Cathedral Gully, Gore Bay

Like everyone else who wasn't back to work today, waking up to a beautiful blue sky was a Very Good Thing. We had a good friend staying last night and decided on a road trip should the weather be good. We therefore settled on Gore Bay as our destination.

Some 90 minutes north of Christchurch, just outside the cute rural town of Cheviot, Gore Bay is a popular holiday camping resort and the beachfront has a good collection of baches with wonderful sea views. It's an endearing place, especially with the sun shining.

On the way down to the beach from the hills above the sea we passed the Cathedral Gully lookout. This collection of eroded sandstone pillars are similar to those found in the Badlands of the USA.

After our stop at Gore Bay, we then headed to the mouth of the Hurunui River. The waters ran milky with sediment thanks to recent rain in the headwaters in the mountains. We chatted to a hopeful fisherman, who had not been having much luck in trying to bag a salmon - water too dirty apparently.

Another day trip beckons tomorrow, should the weather play ball. I think I'm going to stay local though, maybe Akaroa way. Stay tuned...

Thanks to everyone for the comments on yesterday's Starlight Panorama - I'm glad you liked the shot and appreciated the effort that went into the capture!
