Shoes

... for Cheltenham feet!

Of course, now we are in the 'teenies not the 'sixties, we don't get our feet x-rayed any more! At least, not in the shoe shop. I loved green light on the x-ray machines.

My Start Rite outlet was in a shop called Bolgers in Stillorgan shopping centre in Co. Dublin, a concrete paradise for us children. There were sculptures we could play with, cobbled-ish streets, and sometimes we got a penny to put in the slot of the ride-ons. Even less often, we were taken with the grown ups to have a drink in the restaurant on the mezzanine, the Oyster Grill. This had a pink and purple neon sign and smelled of freshly brewed coffee. Opposite stood Peter Marks hairdresser, where my mother went once a week, to join its ranks of Dublin Ladies under the hairdryers, and mingle with the smell of hairspray, dye and scorch.

Breathe deeply....
