Not tired

Collected Mr H from After School today. Younger brother goes to Hip Hop lessons on a Wednesday, so there was just the one boy to walk home with me. Despite running in his school cross country today, and placing a worthy 8th, and telling me how his legs were shaking when he finished, here he is scampering up the retaining wall. Rather than walking with me along the path below.

We had a really pleasant talk on the way back to the apartment about how he had walked at times, and how he was unable to drink while running (out of a cardboard cup, who can?) and how he didn't want to be one of the fastest runners because they are going to run in the Intercity (whatever that he is). Then after a bit more walking he asked how you get to be able to run fast.

Being a New Zealander raised on Lydiard principles, I told him that all he had to do was to run for fun and stamina. What I didn't tell him was the story about Barry Magee running his fastest ever 10 km race and ranking high in the world that year, after a period of two months pure stamina training. That would mean nothing to a 10 year old, as it shouldn't. At his age it has to be fun.

Later I took some photos of the sunset, which were rather good. Not good enough to displace the untired clamberer.
