Marjorie's ramblings

Victims of communism

Day 4 of my holiday in Romania.

This morning we visited the Merry Cemetery (which I had heard as the "Mary" cemetery). Here there are hundreds of graves each adorned with blue cross plus a painting to represent something about the person who died, plus an ironic poem about them.

We visited the not at all merry man who carves these. The Pentecost holiday continues so he did not want to be photographed at work.

This afternoon we spent at the Museum to Victims of Communism in Sighetu Marmatiei.  Our lovely guide, Smaranda, was born 2 years before the revolution and feels very strongly about the terrible things that happened in her country.

Here is the main hall of the prison, now converted to a museum and memorial.  (I was on the 3rd floor and the netting is for safety purposes. There is something chilling as you look along the walls from cell to cell.  It is a place you must visit if you come here, but be prepared to be challenged by the experience.

Temperatures over 30 degrees for a lot of today but a big thunderstorm tonight may have helped.

Back blip for yesterday here.
