Snake walk

Day 4 of Haltwhistle Autumn Walking Festival and I had a walk to lead today. It was our Archaeology walk with the excellent Phil Bowyer as the expert.

He led us through ancient burial sites, passed burnt mounds, identified clearance cairns, told us about the four poster stone circle, showed us enclosed and unenclosed settlements. It was great fun if a bit on the nippy side. (We did warn people to wear extra clothes but they didn't all follow the advice!)

Finally Phil showed us a technique used by landscape archaeologists. It's "snake walking". I am not joking. You can see the group walking carefully in single file around the edge of an enclosure. If you look closely in large you will see that Phil and one other walker have turned the corner and are heading back towards me.

Off to Photo Club this evening so hurried blip.
