Stellar Bon Voyage

A Stellar Jay, one of our many camp visitors during our stay.

These fellows are quite clever. Once they figure out you are there to stay for awhile (and you have food - what human doesn't?), they come around in the early morning in pairs and make a loud squawking and whistling racket which inevitably wakes you up. Of course, once you're awake you need to eat. We cooked most breakfast meals on a stove Al Fresco. When the cooking started, these birds would come back and perch on the trees above very quiet and patient. If you turned your back for a second, they would swoop down in a stealthy manner and pick up tidbits from your table. Watching this every morning really gave me a greater appreciation for their intelligence.

I have a friend of mine who claims he had one come down and take a piece of sizzling bacon off the stove! I would have loved to have seen the reaction of both parties...

This fellow came by to bid us farewell as we were packing up. One of the many forest entertainments we had free of charge.

I thought the b&w treatment helped make him standout a bit better against the green and brown of the trees.

Enjoy!
