Sgwarnog: In the Field

Bog Ice

A dull day, brightened by a surprise visit from one of my sisters. This provided the excuse for a short New Years stroll on the moor. The ground has largely thawed, and is boggy in the wake of the snow, but the reservoir ice is still intact, and here and there amongst the tussocks and heather some frozen patches remain. A reminder that winter has really only just got underway.

People think of the New Year as a time for a fresh start, but it is nothing of note for the natural world, and today's moor was much the same as yesterday's moor, or at least no different than it normally is from one day to the next.

This patch of bog ice is not as spectacular as my last ice blip, partly because the dull sky wasn't providing any sparkle. I like the way the ice has insinuated itself around the grass though, and how the fissures show it has been around for some time now.

I've collected some more ice pictures from the past few weeks here.
