Caen Hill Locks

After the pessimistic prognosis for the nesting swans at my last visit to the Caen Hill lock flight, I am pleased to bring better news from the top end of the flight, just below Caen Hill Café. I had seen six young cygnets there early in May, and even as I walked towards the lock below the café I could see that all six had survived, and were now substantially larger.

They were gathering beside Monument Lock gate as it was about to open to let through a pair of boats that were laboriously working their way up to the top, and the boaters had been advised to keep them out of the lock as the confined space would frighten them and could cause injury. In the blip you can see them successfully bribed away from danger with the promise of bread from a boat leaving the previous lock.

One of the crew pointed out to me two swans eggs in another nest beside the lock sign.
