Sunrise Through the Red Elm in Mist

This morning was number six in a row for heavy fog and mist. In fact, this particular morning may have been the very foggiest of them all. Visibility was beyond poor; on the roads, you could not see even a car-length in front of you. Anyone with any sense at all was driving with extreme caution.

But as I approached town, I saw the sun rising through the mist and the trees, and I suddenly had a vision of where I wanted to be: standing behind the Arboretum's red elm, watching the sun rise through the mist.

And so I made my way directly to the elm, but the light wasn't there yet. I knew the shot I wanted. I wanted the golden orb shining through the mist and framed within the heart of that tree.

It took a bit of waiting to get some shots like I had envisioned in my mind's eye. (And indeed, there were dark, foggy days this week when NO amount of waiting would bring the sun.)

I think next time I decide to wait out a shot, I may just take a chair along, as often, in obtaining the shot you are hoping for, the waiting can be the hardest part.

The soundtrack . . . I have always been a big fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, since the late 70s and early 80s when I first heard their music. Their 1981 release, Hard Promises, may be my favorite Tom Petty album. This song is from that album: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, with The Waiting.

I'm including two bonus versions, one where TP is joined on stage by Eddie Vedder, and a second one (equally as marvelous) by Linda Ronstadt (the song appears on her 1995 album Feels Like Home, which is unfortunately now out of print). Enjoy!
