St John's Well

I had intended trying to run again, but after the red sky in the morning (sailors warning), the wind and rain put paid to that idea.  Instead I baked a cake – a carrot cake from The Great Sport Relief Bake Off cookbook which I bought earlier in the week.  It all went fine until the icing.  It was too runny.  The recipe said, if it’s too runny put it in the fridge for a couple of minutes.  Mine was in the fridge for a couple of hours and hardly changed consistency.  I added more icing sugar-but it just didn’t seem to be getting thicker.  I iced the cake as best as I could.  The top layer actually started to slide off.  TT then piped up that one of his colleagues had made the same cake earlier this week, and had taken it into work, and had mentioned icing trouble. TT has been tasked with comparing icing stories tomorrow.  This cake tasted ok, but would not have done well in the Bake Off!

BB and TT had much better luck making a castle out of cardboard boxes for BB’s homework.  It’s not quite finished.  I have been delegated the task of making roofs for turrets.

This afternoon we braved the wind (the rain having gone off) and went in search of a Holy Well for freespiral.  We went to Spott and into the field by the church, and walked downhill till we found it hidden in a dip.  This is St John’s Well at Spott.  It is a medieval well located within a stone building (padlocked) - dedicated to St John.  There is a local tradition that an annual pilgrimage was made to the well by the monks of Coldingham Priory. Historical documents also state that this well supplied water to nearby Dunbar during the 18th century.  There was another old building at the bottom of the field, I am guessing they may be related, but will have to look into that further.
