Floating

Time today to load up our little hire car and leave Campeche. The journey was quite long, taking us south and west towards some of the best Mayan ruins in the country. We paused at a town called Champoton where the sea front was especially pretty with blue sky and sea, liberally covered with pelicans, seagulls and old boats – some of which were in use and some that weren't. I particularly like this blip as it's very calm and serene showing one of the boats that is still floating but not usable except by the bird life.

We moved on towards our destination of Rio Bec Dreams hotel near the town of Xpujil (best pronunciation I can come up with is Ush-pu-hill!) and relatively close to the ruins of Calkamul – I say relatively because they’re still well over an hour's drive from here; journeys of 1-2 hours are nothing to locals!

The hotel consists of a series of little huts around a central area for eating. We have a jungalow consisting of living/sleeping area, bathroom and shower. No glass in the windows, just insect screens, and a pet gecko for company. No wi-fi here so this will be a backblip!
As we can't manage a whole day without a ruin, we popped along to Chicanna to see a smallish Mayan collection of buildings amidst heavy woodland.

Most of Mexico is a mess of shacks and buildings in various stages of neglect. Very few homes are anywhere like the standard we are used to in the UK so quite an eye-opener. Generally people seem well fed and well dressed but we’ve noticed may occasions when the very young and very old are out on the streets trying to sell things.  Dinner for us soon and then the ‘big’ ruins tomorrow.
