Marjorie's ramblings

By walkingMarj

Hooray, it's Wednesday!

That's how we feel when we go out with the Haltwhistle Walkers on Wednesdays. We are nearly all of a certain age, but very happy, lively and determined to have a good time.

Today, Geoff led a 10.8 mile walk from Greenhead. We walked via Thirlwall Castle, then climbed up onto the higher land north of Hadrian's Wall. It was a grey day, but the views were good and it was mild.

We had coffee on an outcrop of rocks and here you see Cathy and Pippa getting ready for the next stage of the walk.

Geoff found us a pleasant stream to sit beside for lunch. By then the wind was much stronger. We headed back to Hadrian's Wall Trail near Cawfields Quarry and walked west to Walltown Quarry. It was so windy by then that we stayed on the lower path instead of climbing up to Hadrian's Wall Trail. It would have been difficult to keep our feet.

My extra is the Roman altar at Aesica. People leave coins here for luck and no one seems to steal them. You can see the breadth of the coutryside beyond. Was Irene taking or leaving a coin? You can make up your own mind on that one!

As we arrived back at Greenhead for a welcome drink in the pub, the sun came out and the views on my drive home were lovely.
