Destiny and welcome to Newcastle

The statue on the left is titled "Destiny" and was created by Newie Artist, Julie Squires to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Newcastle Port operations.  The artist says the inspiration was the figureheads on the bows of early sailing ships.  I have tried to get a reasonable shot of it before  without much success but there was no much else on offer tonight.

Destiny is situated on Dyke Point in Carrington on the site of the old Government Dockyard which then became the State Dockyard where a number of ships were built over the years.  The dockyards officially closed on 3 March 1987.  Just behind her is a building which says "Welcome to Newcastle".  More for the entering ships I suspect than any landlubbers.

Happy Friday blippers and hooray for the weekend.
