Legion by David Kemp

Today we cycled 35 miles from the west end of Glasgow to Dunoon.

The best part of the route was between Paisley and Kilmacolm on new tarmac over an old railway line (see the extra). There were several industrial sculptures along the way. This one - Legion by David Kemp - was my favourite.

In contrast, picking our way out of Glasgow was rather tricky with a lot of stopping and starting to keep track of the Sustrans cycle route, and we got into a bit of a pickle in Greenock that required a huge extra climb through a housing estate as a marked diversion off the main track.

Here in Dunoon we have experienced one of the warmest and friendliest welcomes ever from the tattooed, Zen Bhuddist, Dylan-obsessed, poet proprietor of Abbots Brae guest house. There were drinks on arrival, and after we took our showers our favourite music was playing in the drawing room. Dinner is delicious here too. We will be back.

Exercise today: 35 miles of tandem riding.
