Marjorie's ramblings

RPS Documentary Group (Northern)

After the fiasco of the last meeting, when I was so jet lagged that people thought I could not operate a laptop and projector, today's meeting went much better.

We had given ourselves the whole day to allow time for discussion. Harry (not the Harry who sometimes comments here) led an excellent discussion about the nature of documentary photography. He is obviously an experienced tutor. Lots of people joined in.

Then we saw the digital images people had brought. Some were on the topic of "A Day in the life of........." and some on The Election. Others of us had work we have been doing but not on those topics. Lyn presented a moving set of images of a day in her father's life in his nursing home. So sad to see - and he is in one that had an "outstanding" report from Ofsted recently.

Celine had been on a medical trip to India as the co-ordinator and brought images of patients treated by plastic surgeons because of the terrible mutilation caused by acid throwing.

We had lunch. In the afternoon, we saw prints. Here is Sue showing a panel of 10 prints on a day in her life. These were beautifully executed and provoked a lot of discussion.

In the background you can see some of the art work from the art group that meets in Kibblesworth Millennium Centre (and excellent venue for our meetings). This time I did not get lost, but John and Tony did - made me feel a bit better!

I showed some images from Stepping Stones folk festival. The details I documented might be regarded as art photography rather than documentary - interesting.

Off to hear Chris Francis, in our village hall, talk about walking from Land's End to John O'Groats.
