Sir Nigel Gresley without duck

Sir Nigel Gresley, CME of the GNR and LNER and designer of Mallard, holder of the world stream speed record. His statue was commissioned by the Gresley Society Trust to mark the 75th anniversary of his death and was unveiled in 2016.

The reference to the missing duck is about a desire by some people to include a Mallard as part of the commemoration to mark the fact that it was Mallard that broke the world steam speed record. Over 3000 people signed a petition to have the duck included but his family and the Trust were not keen. Now and again a duck appears and is photographed, sometimes an unflattering yellow duck.

We were at Kings Cross enroute for York. I’m nearby for a meeting tomorrow , Susan is having a day in York. We travel back tomorrow evening.

Had a good, if wet walk along the Harland Way between York and Harrogate, rounded off by a good curry.
