Fungal Foray at Allen Banks

Did you know that you need to involve all your senses when identifying fungi? We learned a lot about this today on the National Trust Fungal Foray with Gordon Beakes. You can see Gordon’s hand in the image.

Gordon is a true enthusiast. He does a fungal walk in our Autumn Walking Festival every year. I have not been on the team for that walk for a few years, so I decided to go on a rival different walk.

I cannot begin to remember all the Latin names for the many different species we saw.

The walk was enlivened by the presence of three official fungus recorders. One carried many bags and pulled out the appropriate chemicals when required, (see extra). They had interesting "discussions" when they had different ideas about the names of the fungi. They were amazing.

The weather forecast was wrong and we had sunshine and no showers.

Brilliant.
