baobab

I was up early this morning and have made a start on  editing my Zambia photos and preparing a talk for a week on Monday.

I was distracted by the sun casting some nice shadows on my desk from this ornament I bought from the lovely Tribal Textiles shop at Mfuwe airport. I have a "thing" about baobab trees - one evening last week we stopped near a huge one for our sundowner and I couldn't take my eyes off it. Our guide said that it could easily be 500 years old (quite a youngster since the oldest dated tree was over 2,400). I was sad to read that many large and old baobab trees have died recently, probably as a result of drought due to climate change. So this sits on my desk as a poignant reminder of what  is precious.
