Achmelvic Bay

Fabulous day, almost wall to wall sunshine, with sun from the off which is always cheering, and it warms the house quickly.

We had a weird weather phenomenon as we set out for our walk. A short shower, almost over as we left but when we got to the turn off for Lochinver via Inverpolly (the wee mad road!) it was white over for about 200 yards, obviously a localised hail shower. We soon ran out of it and into the sun. Stopped in Lochinver for a coffee at the Lochinver Larder which is better known as the pie shop. Pies were bought!

Headed to Achmelvic beach, which has fabulous white sands and started our walk from there. Grace and John come here and have swum in the blue but cold waters, Eda, sensibly, only goes on the beach in her wellies. There were a couple of Mergansers in the bay.
The walk took us to Alltan’abradhan where there is an old mill next to a stream. There were great views of the bay along the way and we were accompanied by the sound of a Cuckoo. A short walk beyond the mill, following the stream, we came to this little cove. A perfect spot for our picnic. Sent a picture of the bay to Grace and it turned out that she had swum here last year.

A most pleasant walk of 5 miles with a few ups and downs but not difficult. When we got back to the beach there were a number of people, some children paddling! and a guy flying a Bat Kite.

We made a quick visit to the Highland Pottery but managed not to spend and then returned the same road with very clear mountain views en route and passed three red deer which are very often seen here.

Quick stop at the Am Fouran Bar to sit outside for a drink with a Summer Isle view and then back to the house.
Mmm pie for tea. We have learned that one each is too much so we got Pork, Apple and Cider to share and a Rhubarb and Strawberry to share for afters. Yes I know, too much pastry, but we are on holiday and they are delicious!!
