Wilmott's Fortress

No rugby today, so we had a very quiet morning.  TT did go out for a run, but  TT and I pottered around the house. Eventually we made a plan to go out – Berwick upon Tweed was our destination.

We struggled to find somewhere to park, but were “lucky” to find an odd space which TT managed to squeeze into.  First stop was lunch, then we walked up the river, admiring the bridges as we went.  Poor BB was feeling the chill, as we were walking into the wind, and he had shorts on.  We took a path that headed up the hill, even though we didn’t really know where we were going to come out.  We came to a road, and followed it back to Berwick.  It was Heritage Open Day in Berwick and we kept seeing signs for Wilmott’s air raid shelter.  We always seemed to be walking in the right direction but never quite getting there.  Eventually we came to the house which was the destination.  Having followed the signs, I was keen to go and see it.  The boys were less keen, but followed me into someone’s front garden.

The owner of the house, told us a fascinating story about it.  Do read this article.  Once we had had a look in, we continued on our way.  We wandered back through town to the car.  We then headed back up the road, stopping in Dunbar, so the boys could go to church.  I went for a walk along part of the John Muir Way, before meeting up with them, and we headed home for a late tea.

Later TT and I continued watching The Bridge.

This is BB in the air raid shelter, and in the extra.
