St George - Queensland

...today we drove 220km north crossing the border into Queensland near a village called Hebel. There was a road block with some friendly young Policemen who were checking if we had been to Victoria in the past fortnight. They had turned some travellers back but we were OK to proceed. Some more funny names include Angledool and Dirranbandi  (meaning land of the croaking frog) along the Castlereagh and Carnarvon highways. The road was still a bit rough as it crosses wide flood plains. It doesn’t rain that much but after a flood the water doesn’t drain away rapidly ( was over the road near Lightning Ridge for two years). We drove into the Balonne shire and we were surprised to see such a wonderful body of water here at St George. We did a lovely walk along the edge of the river, I had a coat on but was too hot. It likes to be called the inland Queensland fishing capitol. I had heard of the Balonne River but was most impressed with it as I didn’t know of the size.

There are some typical Queenslander style of housing architecture here ( up on stilts and weatherboard). A funny sign that caught my eye was “$30,000 Rabbit Keeping Penalty”.

I think these flowers are bougainvillea for flower Friday.
